Buildings

Buildings written up in full

A catalogue record describes a photograph. An entry makes an argument about a building — claim, evidence, confidence, rights, and a list of what is still missing. Slower to write, and the only way an archive stays trustworthy as it grows.

The entries

  • The surviving photograph on which the reconstruction is based: a rendered range with a tiled roof, an adjoining stone gable, a sign above the door and a rubble boundary wall.

109 Church Street, and the house that stood there before it

There is a photograph in the collection, older than anything else we hold, showing a rendered range with a tiled roof and an adjoining stone gable. A sign hangs above the door. Two men are in the frame. The building is not there now.

    Probable

Do you know a building here?

Who lived there, when it changed, what was pulled down. A building nobody remembers is a building we cannot reconstruct.

Add to the archive

A photograph, a name, a date, a memory — or a correction if we have got something wrong. Nothing is published until a person has read it and come back to you.

Your original stays yours and stays untouched. We publish an optimised copy with its location and camera data removed. If you would rather not send a file at all, we will happily come to you and scan it in your own front room.

We are at the very beginning, so this is a list of people to contact rather than a rota. Tell us roughly what you might enjoy and how much time you have, and we will be in touch when that part of the work starts.
